As more developments continue to bulldoze their way into Roppongi, the startling mix of old and new becomes increasingly complex. Strolling around the neighborhoods just west of Roppongi Hills will give you a sense of what the area felt like ten years ago. A stop at Tahiti will reward you with excellent curry lunch sets that include dessert and coffee. Publishing house Switch runs the well-stocked Rainy Day Bookstore & Café down a quaint back street in Nishi Azabu. The nearby temple is also a great place to meditate for those shell-shocked by Roppongi’s urban intensity.
Tadao Ando’s Signature Style
The Design Sight Museum is not merely a display space but a hub for creativity and design exploration. The building serves as a platform for exhibitions, workshops, and events that celebrate the diverse facets of design. From industrial design to interactive installations, the museum’s typology caters to a broad spectrum of design disciplines. The structure, now considered to be one of Tokyo’s signature works of architecture, is impressive and beautifully simple in its aesthetics at the same time.

Our aim was to design a structure asserting itself as a design museum without disturbing the ambience of the natural environment surrounding it. In order to achieve this, we decided to place 80% of the floor space of the museum underground. Indeed, it required highly advanced techniques to process the 54 meter-long plate of steel used as the roof. This project would not have succeeded without the skills and techniques offered by all the craftsmen involved in its construction. People on the site bravely tackled the difficulties inherent in accommodating the requirements of the design without any compromise.

The participants' ideas constitute the exhibition content, which manifests itself as "the Future in Plural Form," like a flourishing plant. Design tools have evolved dramatically so that anyone can produce beautiful lines and forms. This proliferation risks copy-and-paste jobs that take design down blind alleys. Let’s admit not just that we are influenced by such pieces, but let’s be jealous of them! The greatest masters and regular people live to the same age, so let all of us use our time to create wonderful Originals for the future,’ he continued. In addition to exhibitions directed by designers, the institution also hosts a wide variety of design-focused activities such as talks and workshops.
Tokyo Midtown was created to be the center of design culture in Japan, driven by facilities including 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Suntory Museum of Art and Tokyo Midtown Design Hub. Nearby Tokyo Midtown is home to The National Art Center, Tokyo, Mori Art Museum, the design-themed complex AXIS, architecture specialist TOTO Gallery-MA and a number of design offices. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is itself enhenced by synergy with those facilities in the area. In design, no matter what a hard-fought process that designing may have been for the creator, the output should always embody love, dreams, and be a gift for those who receive it. Only when this happens does design turn into something captivating; something that can't be explained through mere words. A design museum is the link that connects the creator, the receiver, and the storyteller.
It inspires visitors to look beyond the conventional and explore the limitless possibilities of design. Whether you’re a design professional or simply someone who appreciates the beauty and functionality of well-thought-out design, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT offers a unique and enriching experience that is sure to ignite your imagination. Ando has prioritized accessibility, ensuring that the museum is well-connected to public transportation and pedestrian pathways.
The success of this ambitious project is a tribute to the skilled craftsmen who meticulously executed the design without compromise, showcasing the pinnacle of Japanese construction expertise. Most of the objects we encounter in our everyday lives were designed in some way or another. Yoshiizumi says that the processes by which objects are made include processes by which raw materials become medium for the purpose of creation. What he means is that a raw material, which did not have a particular meaning beforehand, is assigned meaning relating it to an object and becomes a medium through its relationship to people or other living things.

Planning a Trip to Japan?
The simple lines of the building’s steel-and-concrete roof are typically Japanese in their emphasis on modesty. Temporary exhibitions typically focus on the role design plays in daily life and how we interact with it. The museum is near the Tokyo Midtown complex in Roppongi, a short walk from Nogizaka Station. When we think about the material presence of an object we use, we probably do consider how the human assigned meaning to the medium. Otherwise put, when we look at a created artifact, we might well ponder the stuff from which it is made.

The venue stands out for its dynamic roster of exhibitions and diverse events, encompassing thought-provoking talk shows and interactive workshops. The architectural marvel of the building, distinguished by its expansive steel roof, is the brainchild of renowned architect Tadao Ando. Eschewing the conventional box-like design, Ando's signature curved silhouette cascades elegantly towards the ground, inspiring not a sense of confinement but of comfort. For those of us that hold a great interest in architecture and design, the Design Sight (read as “two-one two-one design sight”) behind Roppongi's Tokyo Midtown building is certainly worth a visit.
A staircase leads to the ‘underground’ area, where travelling exhibitions are held. Set on the edge of Midtown Garden, which is located in the Tokyo Midtown complex, a large portion of the gallery space is underground. The idea for the roof as one sheet of folded steel was inspired by Issey Miyake's A-POC "A Piece of Cloth" concept. The Exhibition seeks to rediscover and reinterpret the human relationship to raw material. We provide an opportunity for visitors to rethink a world in which life is interwoven with raw material. This exhibition employs a tool called "Future Compass" to trigger ideas about the future.
However, we are most unlikely to think of the original, pre-processed raw material. We recognize it as made of wood, but rarely give attention to trees in their primordial, living sense. This Exhibition proposes that the meaning of designed objects ought, rather, to come from open dialogue with constituent raw materials. Humanity has been surrounded by such materials since the dawn of history, and people have created something through interchange with these primordial things. And yet, modern society has developed in such a way as to deprive us of this.
We hope that this exhibition will help guide all of our visitors to find their entrance into this world of design. Located in the beautiful Midtown Garden, a gateway to Hinokicho Park in Minato-ku, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT enjoys a prime position where visitors to the garden are seamlessly drawn to the site. It's important to note that operating hours, days of closure, and ticket prices for Gallery 1&2 and Gallery 3 may vary based on the specific programs running.
For those of us that hold a great interest in architecture and design, the Design Sight behind Roppongi’s Tokyo Midtown ..
